Software Freedom Day Philippines 2016

September 8, 2016

Assembly Hall, National College of Public

Administration and Governance (NCPAG)

University of the Philippines Diliman.

Background and Rationale

Sixty years ago, computer operating systems were bundled with hardware systems and software source codes were readily available. There was a general spirit of shared knowledge and collaboration to ensure that software, from pieces of code to full-blown operating systems, were running smoothly and well.

Today, proprietary software and operating systems are more the norm. At the same time, using software has become expensive. It is in this context that Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) presents itself as a viable, affordable, and useful alternative, especially for users in less developed countries like the Philippines.

Since 2004, Software Freedom Day (SFD) has been an international celebration of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). Every third Saturday of September, SFD is celebrated around the general objective of educating the public about the benefits of using high quality FOSS in education, in government, at home, and in business -- in short, everywhere! The non-profit organization Software Freedom International coordinates SFD at a global level, providing support, giveaways and a point of collaboration, but volunteer teams around the world organize the local SFD events to impact their own communities.

In the Philippines SFD is celebrated by different teams all over the country. The largest celebration has been headed by the Computer Professionals' Union (CPU) together with its partner schools, organizations and FOSS communities. Since our first SFD in 2004, we have grown our audience and partners to more than 1,000 students, and advocates.

This year, CPU will be celebrating SFD Philippines with the theme, The CHANGE WE NEED: FOSS, Better Internet, Data Privacy, Atbp.” This is in recognition of the need of the information and communications technology community (ICT) to articulate the specific and immediate changes needed by the sector, with emphasis on FOSS, better internet and data privacy.

Goals and Objectives

  • To celebrate software freedom and the people behind it

  • To foster a general understanding of software freedom, and encourage adoption of free software and open standards

  • To create a venue for enthusiasts and advocates of software freedom to connect, join and create communities

  • To discuss and create a general understanding of other issues, especially better internet and data privacy, that besets the Philippine ICT sector today

Event Overview

The CHANGE WE NEED: FOSS, Better Internet, Data Privacy, Atbp.” will be a vibrant gathering of ICT students, professionals, as well as FOSS enthusiasts and advocates. The event stands as an opportunity to promote and assess the state of FOSS in the Philippines and the world, share skills and knowledge, evaluate recent developments, and collectively chart a way forward for FOSS, better internet, and data privacy in the Philippine context.

The SFD Philippines 2016 program seeks to promote inquiry, foster dialogue, enhance skills, and encourage individual and collective action among attendees. The morning plenary session will focus on FOSS, better internet, and data privacy policy, practice and issues while afternoon sessions will feature web technologies, open hardware, open content, and practical applications of FOSS for developers, artists, students and educators.
