Ondoy's death toll in Tanay climbs to 50

MANILA - The death toll from tropical storm Ondoy (international codename Ketsana) may reach 300 as more bodies turn up in Tanay town, Rizal province on Wednesday.

Local data from Tanay said a total of 50 people have been confirmed killed during Ondoy's onslaught, more than double the number of fatalities recorded by the national government's National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC).

As of 6 a.m. Wednesday, the NDCC has so far confirmed 19 fatalities in Tanay. The number is among the NDCC's record of 87 fatalities in Rizal province.

The municipal hall's data showed that 29 of the bodies from Tanay were retrieved near a cooperative's building in Barangay San Ildefonso.

Local authorities said the building collapsed due to raging floods that hit the town while Ondoy was pouring a month's volume of rain in just a few hours.

Authorities said only two people were trapped in the building, but the collapse claimed the lives of residents living around it.

The NDCC has confirmed a total of 246 dead people due to the storm. Of the partial death count, 105 were recorded in Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon) and 101 from Metro Manila. With a report from Zyann Ambrosio, ABS-CBN News
